Why is the On-screen Keyboard so Difficult to Master?

Is the iPhone keyboard less usable for accomplished touch typists than less experienced typists who still watch the keyboard while pressing keys?

I make a lot of mistakes while typing on the iPhone keyboard. I think it’s because I look at the words on screen, as I would when touch typing, rather than the on-screen keyboard.

When using a normal keyboard the feel of the keys and their relative positions give me enough feedback to forget about them; they blend into the background. The iPhone keyboard has no tactile feedback, but instead gives me a visual clue by making each letter pop-up larger as I type.

Because I’m not used to watching the keyboard, I sub-conciously miss this visual feedback and make a lot of mistakes.

The iPhone keyboard has been received with mixed feelings. I suggest this is mostly due to the normal typing skill of the individual at the time they start using the on-screen keyboard.

What do you think?
